Independence Day

We started the day with honey pancakes & a call to my dad who celebrated his 60th birthday today!

We wanted to do something fun with the boys today but we didn't want be someplace crowded & hot that we would have to keep the boys confined to their wagon at.

I found a historic site nearby, Fort King George, that was celebrating Independence Day with "Cannons Across the Marsh." They had free lemonade & watermelon to boot so we decided to check it out.
I'm still surprised by the beauty of Coastal Georgia. It is so different than what I'm use to from the Gulf Coast of Florida & I honestly didn't expect it to be so beautiful here.

So we decided to NOT use the wagon & let the boys walk. I didn't really know what to expect? Sometimes you show up to these "forts" & all they are are holes in the ground where something use to be, sometimes there are partial ruins & in today's case, there was a little of both plus some recreated building we could walk in along with the cannons being fired & a nice nature trail.

Caden really loved having the freedom to walk ahead & explore a little but if a person showed up he was quick o grab Donna & hide his face. Silly kid!

Kellan also enjoyed his independence but didn't get quite as far ahead as Caden did.

Garren was the straggler, he didn't really seem too into walking the trail but I think it was because there was not an audience (or girl to chase) He stuck close by but also loved being able to walk on his own.

After our little hike we had some very flush boys, it was about 90 degrees out. So we had some lemonade & then headed out to find some lunch. There was not much of anything open in the small town so we settled for McDonald's & the boys got their first real Happy Meals.

They were so pleased with the chocolate milk treat I had decided on that they really didn't eat much of anything else. Garren nibbled a little of a nugget & Caden & Kellan had a couple of fries but none of them put down their milk cups until the milk was all gone :)

We all had a nice nap this afternoon & are now ready for another work day tomorrow.

I hope you all had a fabulous 4th too!!!

  1. How fun!! I love history and would totally dig this place. I think it's great that you and Donna take the boys on little adventures just the 5 of you. For the longest time I've felt like I've needed to be with tons of family and friends on special occasions but that's changing. This 4th of July we did everything just the 3 of us and it was so great. There is something very special about spending quality time on these holidays that only come around once a year with just the immediate family. I look forward to doing it more. Thanks for the inspiration. :)
